I operated this on my desk, and works well.  You'll have to plug in either headphones or a powered speaker to hear this, as the internal speaker is silent.  I tried it first with headphones, and it sounds good.  Second I plugged in a small powered speaker, and it sounded good that way, too.

To power this up remove the two black screws on each side of the front panel, and slide the chassis out.   Put a 9V battery (not included) into the battery clip, reverse the removal process, and you're good to go.   I operated it with the volume all the way up, and the headphones volume was confortable.

This is very clean, no cosmetic issues, at all.
